Oil on linen
"The canvas holds memory the way soil holds water — slowly, reluctantly, then all at once."

Estuary at Dusk

"Encaustic holds the light differently than oil — it traps it, bends it, makes it amber."

The Weight of Fog
Oil on canvas
"Painted in three sessions. The fog arrived on its own — I only provided the ground."
The Studio
Where the work
is made
Flake white, raw umber, bone black.
The palette is never cleaned mid-session.

Canvas weave, 12-thread linen.
Ground with three coats of rabbit skin glue.

North light, Williamsburg studio.
Painted between 6am and noon only.
"I work with materials that resist — linen that pulls back, encaustic that sets before you're ready, oil that dries on its own schedule. The friction is the point. The painting is a negotiation."
— Mara Solenne, Studio Notes, 2025
